Hope for the riot victims of Gujarat

Each successive budget saw the prices reach newer heights, making bigger and bigger holes in the pockets of the smokers.

Lesser men changed to cheaper brands or vainly tried to tame their smoking habits. But KC was made of a sterner stuff. One fine morning he made the irrevocable decision to say goodbye to smoking and has never looked back.

KC was not perturbed when his landlord approached him to increase the monthly rent by Rs 200. The man had come prepared for sure resistance but consider his surprise when KC readily agreed to pay the enhanced rent from the following month. However, in the bargain, he persuaded the landlord to allow him to sublet a small spare room to a needy student. Thereby, he netted a cool Rs 300 and got a helping hand who brought his daily requirement of milk from the market.

Service award for Cherokee businesses Email this page Print this page

On Jan. 15, the Oklahoma Hotel & Lodging Association presented the awards at the Oklahoma State University Alumni Center in Stillwater. The program honors Oklahoma's outstanding hospitality companies and professionals for their service and commitment to the guest service and hospitality industry.

''We are ecstatic to receive this award,'' said David Stewart, CEO of Cherokee Nation Enterprises. ''As a company, we are committed to supporting our local communities across northeastern Oklahoma. This doesn't happen without our generous employees who have worked so hard throughout the year committing extra time outside of work for community projects. We're excited about the recognition of our community involvement.''

The award was based on service projects completed in 2007 across all seven communities in which Cherokee Casino has locations.

SAUNDERS: HBO's documentary on Louis a knockout

Die-hard boxing fans probably are aware of a televised heavyweight bout coming up Saturday night.

Wladimir Klitschko battles Sultan Ibragimov.

Household names both.

While HBO is billing this as World Championship Boxing, it's not, as they say in the fight business, "the feature attraction."

The bout is sandwiched between Joe Louis: America's Hero . . . Betrayed, a terrific documentary, premiering at 6 p.m. and repeated after the heavyweight battle.

Younger sports fans might not be that familiar with the heroic - and tragic - career of Louis, a career that transcends both the boxing ring and the entire sports arena.

The grandson of a slave, Louis became one the greatest heavyweights of all time and served as an iconic figure - for whites and blacks - during World War II.

How Kevin Federline took his place among the world's most powerful men

Yes, the radical Shia cleric can only manage eighth spot, marked down for what we can only assume is an absence of cod-mystical tattoos and his failure to "bring it" in console-related activity.

Bad news, too, for YouTube founders Steven Chen and Chad Hurley (13), and there'll be tears before bedtime in Syria, whose president, Bashar Assad, limps in at 21. Nothing's upsetting the High School Musical imperium, though: a bunch of dancing kids top the entire list.

But it's K-Fed's showing that effectively skyrockets the exercise to No 1 in the list of Stupidest Power Lists Ever - a position previously held by British GQ for claiming that David Beckham was more powerful than Rupert Murdoch. (And this was in 2001, before David bought all the satellites. I suppose the equivalent nowadays would be observing that Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page lack the clout of Frank Lampard.)

Anyways, foolhardy readers may ask, what of Britney, the Melinda Gates to K-Fed's Bill? Well, this week we have rumours of a far east adoption raid, and a detailed description of the singer's "fantasy room", a specially designated sex room in her Mulholland Drive home.

A Different Perspective

Yogi Bear stood at the entrance to Jellystone National Park. He scouted unattended picnic baskets while awaiting Boo Boo Bears arrival home on the school bus. Yogi and Boo Boo were co-owners of a playoff fantasy team. As Yogi considered himself smarter than the average bear, he figured his team had a decided advantage, but he needed Boo Boos help in researching and deciphering the most recent data before submitting teams for the next round of games. So he waited anxiously and kept a look out for Ranger Smith. The school bus screeched to a halt at the entrance and Boo Boo climbed down the steps, dragging his back pack behind him. The bus roared off in a cloud of dust and rubble. Hey, Boo Boo! Were still in first place in our fantasy league. Lets go look at the stats and make our picks. I dont want to play anymore, Yogi.

Reporter's journal | Jerry Brewer on covering Gloria Strauss

The Strausses are relaxing this weekend because school starts Tuesday. Most of the children go to St. Philomena Catholic School in Des Moines. Gloria's father, Doug, is a math and Spanish teacher at Kennedy High School in Burien.

Kennedy opened last week, and obviously, Doug didn't get to start the year with his students. He's been thinking about school a lot lately. Even before Gloria went into the hospital three weeks ago, Doug was trying to balance taking care of Gloria with preparing for the start of school.

More than anything, he says, this experience has given him more clarity on what he wants from both his career and family life. He hasn't detailed his epiphany, but he keeps referring to it. Despite Gloria's illness, Doug seems really at peace with his life and thankful for what he's learned from this struggle.
