Barack Obama - a John Kennedy for our times

Al-Qaeda may be unpredictable, but it would be a mistake for it to interfere in American politics, even if it had the capacity to do so.

At the start of the primaries, when all eyes were on Iowa and New Hampshire, Senator Clinton was the frontrunner for the Democratic Party nomination. She had the organisation, she had the money, she had the name recognition, she had the professionalism; she even had Bill Clinton, even if he is something of an unguided missile.

But those days are now long ago. Senator Clinton has fallen behind Senator Obama in almost all of these factors, except for Bill Clinton's support. Senator Obama has captured the public's imagination, and gone ahead in the polls, but he also has more money, a better organisation and valuable endorsements from all sectors of the Democratic spectrum.

Committee upholds certification decision in Aberdeen election

Last Monday, the Democratic Election Committee announced that it would not be certifying Willie Cook or Kennedy Meaders for the citys April 1 election.

A meeting was set aside on Wednesday if those candidates wanted to contest that ruling. Cook did. Meaders, who would have been a candidate for police chief, did not attend.

Coy Flynn, committee chairman, opened the meeting and said, Were here to hear what Willie Cook has to say about us not certifying him.
Cook asked why the committee did not certify him. He was not certified, the committee said, because he does not live in the Ward he qualified in, Ward 3. Committee member Bob Miller said pictures had been taken of the house he has in Ward 3 and that prior to that day, the pictures showed it to be vacant.

NIU Gunman's Contradictions Baffle Police

MADISON, Wis. (CBS) ― Steven Kazmierczak had the look of a boyish graduate student - except for the disturbing tattoos that covered his arms. Professors and students knew him as a bright, helpful scholar, but his past included a stint in a mental health center. Many saw him as happy and stable, but he had developed a recent interest in guns and was involved in a troubled - possibly abusive - on-again, off-again relationship. What people initially told police about the Northern Illinois University shooter didn't add up, and now investigators are searching for answers to what triggered Thursday's bloody attack, in which five students were killed and several more injured before Kazmierczak committed suicide. While searching for a motive, authorities questioned family and friends and tried to determine whether he had recently broken up with his longtime girlfriend. One person who knew the couple, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, said the couple's relationship was on-again, off-again and "really rocky." Kazmierczak was controlling, she said."He was abusive, had a temper," she said.

Historic Hotels of America(R) Presents 2008 Directory

WASHINGTON, Feb. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The 2008 Historic Hotels of America directory is available and offers new features to help travelers choose the hotel that best suits their needs and expectations.

"Historic Hotels of America showcases some of this country's greatest travel destinations -- full of the hospitality and amenities modern travelers require, while offering a sense of place, authenticity and diversity in experiences," says Thierry Roch, executive director of Historic Hotels of America.

The guide allows travelers to quickly determine if the hotel was originally built as a hotel or converted into a hotel. Identifiers describe the type of hotel (inn, hotel or resort) as well as the style of service (charming, classic or luxurious).

Ex-publisher sues Trump

Former Chicago Sun-Times publisher F. David Radler, who testified against his former boss Conrad Black in the trial stemming from the alleged looting of the company, is suing Donald Trump for refusing to sell Radler a condo in the new Trump International Hotel & Tower at a discount.

Crain's Chicago Business reported the story in today's edition.

6-liter plays heavy with Tahoe hybrid

Q: In reference to the Chevy Tahoe hybrid (Transportation, Dec. 16), why would Chevy put the largest Tahoe engines in the hybrid? Wouldn't a smaller, more economical engine, like the 5.3-liter V-8, which also has active fuel management to shut off 4 cylinders when not needed, improve economy more? I'm wondering whether they are making a mistake similar to Honda's now-discontinued V-6 hybrid Accord.

-- P.L., Chicago

A: Chevy says the hybrid adds weight from the batteries so the Tahoe uses a 6-liter V-8 to better handle that weight than the 5.3 liter. Plus, the 6-liter develops enough power so you still can travel 65 to 70 m.p.h. on the interstate when the engine switches to 4 cylinders to conserve fuel.
