At Last, a Presence

In the last year, the BMF has co-sponsored events with 20 other campus organizations and has become a strong voice in UC politics.

These days, black men aren't sitting on the steps of their freshman dorm listening to “Suicidal Thoughts" and contemplating dropping out. They're running for UC president, lobbying administrators, commanding Harvard's attention. They've taken charge.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Ashong was the first of them all. A captivating orator who could hypnotize his audience with unceasing hand motions and a spark in his eye, Ashong was all over the campus, in the Black Students' Association (BSA), Kuumba, the Haitian Alliance, and occasionally at Asian American Association meetings—when they had ice cream.

But the suspicious glances classmates cast his way made him realize how different his experience was from that of his black female peers.

Harangody emerging as Big East's best big man

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Time after time, Luke Harangody stomped toward the bench press, shoving logic and reason out of his path as he positioned himself below the bar.

With every attempt, the howls in Notre Dame's weight room grew louder. Fighting Irish players huddled around Harangody, playfully prodding their teammate, whose bullishness was wildly entertaining, never mind borderline insane.

Strength and conditioning coach Tony Rolinski, in an effort to simulate the NBA combine, was recording each player's bench-press repetitions at 185 pounds. Harangody aimed to beat his mark from the previous week, but on his first stab, he finished with the same total.

Bugs on the menu at UN meeting in Thailand Áp¦X°ê ...

Insects were on the menu last week at a UN meeting in Thailand. At the meeting experts talked about the dietary value of bugs, which are delicacies in some countries.

Eating bugs is limited to gross-out TV shows in many countries. But the UN Food and Agriculture Organization says that 1,400 insect species are eaten around the world.

Among the most popular insect munchies are beetles, ants, bees, crickets and moths. Bugs can be nutritious, sometimes offering as much protein as meat and fish.

The three-day meeting in Chiang Mai was organized to look at how nutritious insects are. Scientists at the meeting said not enough is known about most edible forest insects.

Farming insects could provide new sources of income for rural populations. Thailand, where 200 insect species are eaten by humans, would benefit greatly.

American Way

Smith Clove Museum Village, a staple of schoolboy field trips for five generations, captures some of the history that still lives on here.

This magnificent pergola was a five-month labor of love, destined for a Greenwich, Conn., estate.

On the recently paved Reynolds Road that borders the field just below Varcadipane's home, for instance, sits a tiny rustic cabin where a great- grandfather of Roscoe Smith, the late founder of Orange & Rockland Utlities, is said to have hung a British Redcoat during the War for Independence. On the farm, the stump of John Smith's Banyan Oak, a 186-year-old tree the settler planted around 1800, bears testimony to the origins of the classic design elements of doors, desks, tables, chairs and flooring in the nearby farmhouse that has now housed my family for 97 years.
